Position Title: HERO Advisor – Yakima School District
Department: Programs, Pre-College Accelerated Services
Reports to: Director, Pre-College Accelerated Services
FLSA Status: Exempt – Full Time

Summary: The HERO Advisor will work with school staff to identify potential students and recruit under- represented students from select College Success Foundation High Schools (CSFHS) and feeder middle schools. These identified students receive targeted support to increase the academic attainment and increase the college going rate of low-income, under-represented students in the CSFHS. The year-round HERO Advisor position will work with community organizations to partner with schools to provide program support, advocacy, and leadership development. The HERO Advisor will work in a collaborative manner with the CSFHS principals, school counselors, community-based organization and with the staff of CSF’s home office in Issaquah.

Responsibilities:
  • Work with CSFHS principals, staff and local community to recruit students who meet the HERO Initiative criteria.
  • Work with CSFHS principals, staff and local community to develop a pool of informal mentors trained to work with program participants.
  • Work with students, parents and school staff to identify student academic needs and develop Individual academic plans to prepare for a Washington state college upon graduation from high school.
  • Collaborate with staff, higher education community and community organizations to provide access to extended day and out-of-school time opportunities for program participants.
  • Collaborate with community organizations to provide academic advising/coaching/planning, mentoring, leadership development, social and cultural development and peer group activities.
  • Provide outreach programs, including institutes with workshops on a range of academic, social and college planning topics for participants.
  • Provide college awareness through campus visits for participants and their parents or guardians.
  • Ensure that all participants are meeting their program commitments.
  • Be knowledgeable of all scholarship and mentoring information distributed to CSF staff. Disseminate appropriate information to all participants, mentors, and CSFHS staff in a timely fashion.
  • Provide early outreach activities, college awareness and college preparation information to non-program participants, grades 7-10; this include support to other college access programs, for CSFHS and feeder middle schools.
  • As requested, submit reports to CSF Director, Pre-College Accelerated Services.
  • Maintain communications with CSFHS and middle school staff, CSF home office staff, other HERO Advisors, mentors, students (HERO program participants and others), parents/guardians and community members.
  • Keep complete and accurate files/records on community volunteers and the HERO program participants. Transmit such information as appropriate.
  • Be an advocate for the HERO students and CSF by attending community functions and programs that will enhance the visibility of the program and ultimately help more young people succeed in high school and eventually complete four-year college degrees.
  • Attend all CSF events at the CSFHS and middle school involving potential applicants, selected scholarship recipients and mentors. Attend other events, at CSF or other organizations, such as training and workshops as required.
  • Meet with HERO program participants to assist with the college planning process. This may involve group training/information sessions.
  • Supervise the work and hours of work study student assigned to the program.
  • Work with CSFHS and middle school principals and staff to assist in the assessment of HERO program participant needs for special assistance, such as tutors, to enhance the academic success of all HERO participants at the CSFHS.
  • Develop academic support programs for HERO participants.
  • Attend team, department and CSF meetings at the CSF home office in Issaquah, WA.

Qualifications:
  • Be upbeat, positive, outgoing, personable and able to relate well with diverse populations and age groups, with particular emphasis on working with young people, ages 12 – 19.
  • A proven “self-starter”, able to work independently while observing and complying with all standards of the supervision personnel and related programs and services of the employer.
  • Must have an established commitment to work collaboratively and harmoniously with the CSFHS and middle school staff, colleagues, community resource persons and CSF home office staff. Creativity, human relations skills, and problem solving ability are essential to a team approach to organizational goal attainment.
  • Have strong organizational skills and ability to handle a variety of tasks and projects on an ongoing basis, including meetings with students, school and CSF staff and community resource persons.
  • Be familiar with the communities served by the CSFHS, and recent effective involvement with students in those school communities is also preferred.
  • Possess knowledge, skills and expressed interest in developing proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office products is preferred.
  • Must work collaboratively with CSF College Preparatory Advisors and CSF College and Career Coaches.
  • Able to work effectively in a team environment; be a team player.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree.
  • Five years of experience in fields related to mentoring, youth development, teaching, counseling, and/or leadership development.
  • Reliable transportation and be willing to commute to the assigned CSF High School(s).
  • Ability to work occasional nights, weekends, special program events and multi-day CSF Scholar Programs.
NOTE: HERO Advisor positions may change based upon needs of the program and available funding.

Occasional travel and visits to the College Success Foundation’s home office in Issaquah, WA and other in-state locations is required.

Salary will be commensurate based on the applicant’s education level, relative work experience, and other attributes. The Foundation offers outstanding benefits
