Program Director - Seattle Urban Teacher Residency (Seattle)

Program Director: Seattle Urban Teacher Residency

Description

-JOB ANNOUNCEMENT-

PROGRAM DIRECTOR: SEATTLE URBAN TEACHER RESIDENCY

The Seattle Urban Teacher Residency seeks its founding Program Director.
The Alliance for Education (Seattle’s local education fund 1) Seattle Public Schools, and the University of Washington are partnering to launch the Seattle Urban Teacher Residency. Planning and design will be undertaken in the 2012-2013 academic year; the First Cohort (25 residents and 25 mentors) will begin in September of 2013.

Educational research is unequivocal: teaching quality is the most important school-based factor in a student’s trajectory. Urban residencies are part of a larger, national movement to rethink teacher recruitment, preparation, support and retention. The Program Director role provides a unique opportunity for someone who sees him/herself as a “builder” and leader in the education space. The successful candidate will launch this pilot effort, link it to similar efforts nationwide and scale it to sustainability.

Urban teacher residency programs, pioneered between 2001-2004 in Boston, Chicago and Denver, apply the medical residency model to teacher preparation. By blending classroom apprenticeship with aligned, graduate- level course work and an intensive resident/mentor partnership, residencies aim to accelerate student achievement through the training, support and retention of excellent teachers.
The Program Director will report to the President & CEO of the Alliance for Education and will be accountable to the governing board of the Residency, which will include leadership from the University of Washington and Seattle Public Schools.

The Program Director will lead the development and ongoing management of the residency program. Governance, External Relations & HR

  • Serving as a liaison to Urban Teacher Residencies United (UTRU) and other UTR programs nationally
