POSITION DESCRIPTION:
The Youth Tutoring Program (YTP) is an educational enrichment program that provides at-risk youth living in Seattle's low income and public housing communities with a safe, positive and fun place to go where they are tutored in school subjects, get help with their homework, play educational games, become computer literate, read books and work with caring adults who encourage and motivate them to succeed and who act as mentors and positive role models. Our children are widely diverse, representing nearly 20 cultures. The Center Support and Substitute Coordinator supports Center Supervisors through evening program support, collects and inputs data about students, helps maintain center organization and decorations, and runs the centers when a Supervisor is not available. This position will split their time between several different locations, often going to a different location each evening. Centers are located throughout the Seattle area.

We are seeking someone who is flexible, able to jump into projects at any stage, has great people skills and is able to connect well both to children and adults. The ideal candidate is warm and welcoming to tutors, students and parents and can create both a calm and organized learning environment. Someone who has a strong understanding of immigrant and/or refugee experiences would bring a lot to this position; speaking an East African language would also be an asset.

Hours and Days Needed: Monday through Thursday, 4:00pm -- 8:00pm during program times which typically correspond to Seattle Public School's (SPS) schedule. Non-school days for SPS such as school breaks and holidays will typically be off-days for this position as well unless there is a particular need in the program. The position will also be needed for summer support during the month of July as well as some June/August days.

MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES:
1. Coordinate and supervise tutoring centers when Center Supervisors are not able to do so.
a. Manage daily center activities.
b. Monitor the implementation of learning goals and activities by staff and volunteers.
c. Maintain organized and accessible learning materials and resources.
d. Respond to volunteer and student schedule changes, coordinate new tutoring matches as needed.
e. Respond to problems and safety concerns as they arise; follow agency protocol.
f. As needed, assess students in math and language arts.
g. As needed, develop learning goals and activities with/for students.
2. Foster an environment where youth and adults are treaded with respect and care, and where learning is perceived to be fun, exciting and important. Support values of a culturally diverse work and learning environment.
a. Maintain a workplace that is welcoming to a diverse volunteer, staff and client group.
b. Work the staff, student and volunteers to encourage learning and understanding about student's cultures.
c. Involve students and volunteers in creating a positive environment.
d. Support annual surveys and other opportunities to gather feedback.
e. Support a stimulating learning environment for students and encourage volunteer tutors in their relationships with their students.
f. Work collaboratively with parents and teachers as needed.
3. Assist youth with homework, literacy enrichment, skill-building activities, higher education preparation and job preparedness.
a. Assist with homework/tutoring curriculum as needed.
b. Guild and supervise students on computer-based activities.
4. Complete administrative work necessary for the on-going operation of the center.
a. Track attendance and academic progress.
b. Track contacts with teachers, parents and the community.
c. Assist in providing narrative and statistical information as needed.
5. Work at tutoring centers to provide support to Center Supervisors during tutoring and on education and administrative projects.
a. Collect and track student information.
b. Support Center Supervisor in creating a visually supportive and appealing learning environment, reorganize physical environment as needed.
c. Grade skill building activities; create special activities for students who need additional support.
d. Maintain organized binders and records.
e. Support Center Supervisors on special projects and implementing new initiatives as they arise.
f. Other duties as assigned.

JOB CONDITIONS:
This position requires the employee to work in an office environment where there may be interruptions and a moderate amount of noise from telephones and conversations among employees. Extensive use of computers and related office equipment is typical of this position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
1. One year relevant classroom or after school experience in teaching or tutoring.
2. Associate's degree in a relevant field; additional relevant experience may substitute for education.
3. Proven ability to work with youth in a respectful and caring manner, focusing on increasing self-esteem and academic skills.
4. Cultural competence in working low-income youth and families from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds.
5. Academic competence in reading, writing and math.
6. Strong classroom management, interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
7. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school, students, parents, community representatives and general public.
8. Evening availability (Program hours are M-TH 4:00pm to 8:00pm).

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Bilingual in an East African (Somali, Tigrinya, Amharic, Oromo) or a Southeast Asian (Vietnamese) language is preferred, but not required.
2. Bachelor's degree in a relevant field.
