Summer Internship Program

MATT GRIFFIN YMCA

Various Positions Available: Level 9, Summer Language Journey, Trek, and YMCA Achievers

GUIDELINES

Internship Goals

1. The Matt Griffin YMCA summer internship program is designed to assist leadership

development program directors and coordinators in completing day-to-day operations

2. Internship opportunities are unpaid, but our organization will assist students in gaining

college credit and experience in the human services/ education/ recreation fields

3. Interns will help us strengthen the YMCA movement and our local community through

special projects and new program development

Internship Standards

We are looking for students who are currently enrolled in 2 or 4 year college and who are

studying education, human services, social work or similar concentration

We are able to accept up to three (3) interns during the summer program session

Interns must show a willingness to learn, good work ethic and organizational skills

The program requires interns to have a somewhat flexible schedule and be willing to

reschedule work hours weekly depending on the needs of the YMCA and its programs

College Credit Details

Students must work with their collegiate institution to obtain credit approval before

starting an internship with the YMCA

Each intern must have a collegiate advisor (or other contact at the university) to serve as

liaison between the university and the YMCA

The YMCA will communicate directly with the advisor regarding grades, questions,

disciplinary concerns

Interns will be supervised by Hannelore Makhani, Leadership Development Director, with

direction and assistance from Summer Programs Director, Coordinators and Discovery Camp

Supervisor

The number of weeks, hours and days worked will be determined by college requirements

set forth by the student’s university as well as the needs of our organization. Schedules

and specifics will be discussed by the supervisor, student and advisor individually

Interns will be given the job title of Assistant Program Coordinator. Responsibilities and

tasks will be developed based on major, concentration and interests

POSITION DESCRIPTION

The Matt Griffin YMCA Summer Internship Program is designed to assist the YMCA and the student.

It is the responsibility of the student to assist in the planning, design and implementation of

programs at the YMCA based upon each individual student’s requirements, interests and collegiate

concentration.

Responsibilities

1. Assist appointed department head

Before the start of the internship, students will be matched with a specific program based

on their interests and the needs of the YMCA. During their time at the YMCA they will be

required to help run the programs that the department is responsible for by assisting

department heads with day-to-day operations

2. Assist with needs of other departments

From time to time other departments at our YMCA will need assistance. When there is

down time throughout the workday, interns are expected to help with the needs of the

YMCA. This may include front desk tasks, building maintenance, special events, etc.

3. Develop a “Special Project”

With the approval of the Leadership Development Director, program leads and their

university advisor, each student will be asked to develop and idea to improve the quality or

enhance services offered by the program they work with. This project could be an

organization method, new program or program component, special event or partnership. A

proposal will be submitted and, upon completion, a short presentation must be prepared.

This project is designed to help students develop professionally, creatively and

organizationally.

4. Be a part of the team and support the organizational structure

Interns are expected to support the team and follow the organization’s policies and

procedures regarding safety, attendance, communication and branding. Interns will develop

a schedule for project completion and are expected to work productively to meet deadlines.

Any changes to the work schedule or inability to complete a task should be reported in

advance, when possible, to the internship supervisor.

5. Represent the YMCA in a positive manner

YMCA interns are expected to project themselves positively to the public, volunteers,

members, guests and fellow staff. They must adhere to the YMCA core values of respect,

responsibility, caring and honesty. Failure to do so may result in the termination of their

position with the YMCA.
