Director of Development and Advancement:
Posted by: Neighborhood House
Seattle, WA, US
Our Mission

The mission of Neighborhood House is to help diverse communities of people with limited resources attain their goals for self-sufficiency, financial independence, health and community building.

Our Agency

Our mission to change the life trajectory of low-income people relies on cutting-edge services to the community. It demands a high standard of excellence from inspired professionals who are passionate about transforming the conditions of poverty. While we share many of the characteristics of an effective organization – a focus on smart business practices and continuous quality improvement - we are committed to keeping our family feel. That’s a family of 200 that speaks 43 different languages and dialects.

Our Next Director of Development and Advancement

We’re looking for an inventive, entrepreneurial and intellectually nimble Director of Development and Advancement who is able to provide strategic leadership to meet the financial needs of an evolving and expanding agency. While Neighborhood House might be 106 years old, things happen quickly here. To get things done you need to be wildly enthusiastic and pretty funny – a self-starter who can work across many disciplines and isn't afraid to try out some audacious ideas. You’re pumped to build relationships with donors, foundations, and businesses, and grow philanthropic support for current and emerging initiatives.

You would work very closely with our Executive Director as a key member of our leadership team. Your responsibilities would include:

Advancing Our Mission

We are an agency that is constantly pursuing new opportunities to address the many needs of low income children, families and elders. We are always cooking up new ideas. Your role is to:

  • Develop and lead our efforts to create new revenue streams and to accelerate

outcomes from our current fundraising strategies.
  • Serve as our fundraising expert and “consultant” on cross-departmental

teams, leading and participating in strategy discussions and providing research

    and analysis.
  • Team with senior leadership to develop short-term and long-term strategies

to secure annual revenue from individuals, foundations, corporations and other

    institutional funding sources.
Communicating our Mission

We are a complex agency. We do many things for many people in many different places. It’s confusing at times. Your job is to:

  • Coordinate an overarching communications strategy, message and content

development across the realms of traditional media, new media and online

    communications.
  • Actively foster positive public relations by overseeing effective agency

promotional materials including annual reports, brochures, visual displays,

donor publications, website and the Voice newspaper.
  • Establish forums for funding partners to get to know the agency and its

program leaders to give a real perspective of services and promote honest

dialogue on the progress and vision for work in the community.
Raising Funds to Support our Mission

Our budget has doubled over the past 12 years through constant fundraising, grant writing and new partnerships. We’re doing great. We want to do more, much more. Your job is to:

  • Provide leadership for data analytics of giving programs to ensure growth

    and maximize effectiveness and results.
  • Leverage current efforts to increase giving from high net worth individuals.
  • Plan and launch an ambitious fund raising campaign to support the future of

our place based initiative in public housing communities.
Leading our Development Team

We have a high functioning, sometimes quirky team of committed professionals. It’s a small, close-knit team. Your role is to:

  • Supervise and coach the seasoned development team to build an expanded

pipeline of institutional funding opportunities, cultivate authentic and lasting

relationships with individual donors and funding partners, and develop

compelling public and private grant proposals.
  • Provide oversight for the development budget to ensure that department

spending fits with work plan priorities.
  • Oversee vendor relationships including consultants, counsel, designers,

    printers, etc.
What We’re Looking for

  • Background and Experience - BA/BS in applicable field; a minimum of five

years successful experience in fundraising, including capital campaigns,

endowment campaigns, annual membership campaigns, planned giving, and

proposal/grant writing. Alternative combinations of education and experience

that yield the same degree of professional and managerial competence may be

    substituted.
  • Leadership and Organization – Collaborative leader who thrives in ‘best

idea’ work environment, exceptional capacity for managing and leading people and

building teams, strong planner and decisive decision maker.
  • Strategic Vision and Dexterity - Excellent analytical and strategic thinking

skills, enjoys working hard and looks for creative challenges, ability to

anticipate trends and plan for results.
  • Relationship Builder – Ability to connect and develop relationships with

diverse constituents, articulate and professional in demeanor in written and

    oral communications.
  • Pursuit of Tikkun - Strong service ethic and a passion for the mission of

    Neighborhood House.
