Northgate READS Enrichment Instructor
Location: Northgate Elementary School, 11725 1st Ave NE Seattle
Supervised by: Daisy Catague, Seattle Parks & Recreation Out of School Time Specialist

Research shows that high-quality summer programs are a key opportunity for students to practice and retain the skills that they have learned during the school year.  Many students, however, do not have access to engaging and high-impact summer programs.  This is a reality that continues to widen the academic achievement gap in Seattle.

Enrichment Instructors would provide enrichment activities in one of the following focus areas: arts, gardening/environmental education, technology, and physical activity.  These enrichment classes are fun and rewarding creative outlets for the incoming 2nd and 3rd graders in our program and create an opportunity for active learning.

Duties:
·         Plan, develop, and implement enrichment activities for cohorts of 10-15 incoming 2nd and 3rd graders.
·         Coordinate with certificated academic teachers to plan enrichment activities that build upon literacy skills taught in academic blocks.
·         Work under the supervision of Seattle Parks & Recreation Out of School Time Specialist to maintain a balance of recreation, enrichment, and academic programs.
·         Collaborate with teachers, school staff, and City of Seattle staff to create an innovative summer program to meet the needs of the underserved student populations in the Northgate neighborhood.
·         Monitor existing safety concerns and respond to emergency situations when necessary. 

Time Commitment: 
·         Three afternoons per week for 3 weeks, noon-2 PM
·         Enrichment program runs Monday through Wednesday, June 25th-August 2nd (No program July 4)
·         Two sessions will be offered:          Session 1 – June 25-July 12   Session 2 – July 16-August 2

Skills and Qualifications:
·         Consistent, flexible, and patient.
·         Understanding of diverse cultural and social/economic backgrounds.
·         Effective in engaging students, able to address different learning and behavioral styles.
·         Strong communication skills.
·         Must be able to complete background checks, including WA State Patrol.

Compensation and Benefits:
·         This is a contracted position.  Individual would submit a Community Based Organization (CBO) Proposal (see attached).
·         Contract rate ranges from $15-$20 (based on experience). W9 required.
·         Instructors will have the chance to participate in a pilot project through the City of Seattle.
·         Instructors will gain valuable work experience and training—ideal for future educators.
Training:
·         Orientation to program structure and school community.
·         Training in literacy tutoring basics will be provided.
