In this typically over-night role at YouthCare's James W. Ray Orion Center you would help support and lead our team engaging homeless and street-involved young adults. You will work to create a safe and caring environment for young adults coming from the streets and actively contribute to creating a positive, stable, responsive, responsible and respectful environment for up to 15 young adults who are spending the night at the Orion Center. You will work as partof the YouthCare team of dedicated staff and volunteers.

WORK SCHEDULE: This position is full time and non-exempt. Work schedule consists of regular overnight shifts. Flexibility is required.

POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the supervision of the YAS Program Manager, the YAS Overnight Youth Counselor III is responsible for the supervision of fifteen shelter guests and the nightly management of the program site at the Young Adult Shelter. In conjunction with other shelter staff, the YAS Counselor III's task is to create a safe and supportive environment for shelter guests. Counselors must be comfortable establishing appropriate boundaries and setting firm limits for shelter guests, enforcing shelter rules, providing crisis intervention and attending meetings. This position also includes working one-on-one with shelter Youth Leaders and providing leadership to other YAS Counselors. Additional responsibilities for the position include Drop-in service responsibilities and assisting with meals. Qualified applicants must have the ability to establish a good rapport with homeless young adults with behavioral and emotional issues.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Supervising the Young Adult Shelter Program at night.
• Maintaining safety and managing behaviors in the milieu areas; facilitating activities; preparing and serving meals; kitchen clean up and overall area maintenance.
• Ensuring program rules are being enforced and the nightly operation of program is within regulatory guidelines and agency treatment philosophy.
• Overseeing and delegating tasks to shelter volunteers.
• Helping to create and monitor goal plans and progress for Shelter Youth Leaders and maintaining ongoing communication with Orion Center Case Managers
• Facilitating bi-weekly youth leader meetings.
• Maintaining clear communication with other shelter staff, including attending bi-weekly meetings.
• Completing needed program paperwork including accurate case records, staff log, and guest intake/exit and nightly paperwork.
• Completing incident reports on any facility damage, medical emergencies or any incident which occurs out of the ordinary daily functioning of the shelter.
• Working collaboratively with other shelter staff to ensure the program is providing the best services for each youth.
• Working with other shelter team members to identify obstacles and support strategies for shelter guests.
• Providing conflict de-escalation and mediation to shelter guests.
• Ensuring facility maintenance and cleanliness meets health and safety codes.
• Assisting Shelter Manager in the monitoring of shelter supplies and needs.
• Connecting shelter guests to Youthcare case management.

QUALIFICATIONS:
REQUIREMENTS:
• Acceptance of a variety of lifestyles, behaviors, and cultural and spiritual practices.
• Ability to maintain professional behavior by keeping appropriate boundaries with youth and staff members of the Orion Center.
• Deep understanding of agency philosophy including harm reduction, positive youth development and conflict resolution.
• Experience working in crisis situations and with de-escalation techniques.
• Ability to work as a member of a team.
• Ability to pass a DSHS Criminal Background Check.
PREFERENCES:
• Bachelor's Degree in human services strongly desired. Experience can be substituted in lieu of a degree.
• Experience in a position supervising youth/young adults, preferably in a shelter program.
• Experience with at-risk youth populations.
• Familiarity with homeless resources in King County.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Ability to perform moderate physical work, exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and 10 to 20 pounds frequently.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS -- Within 30 Days of Hire
• Must have current negative TB test
• CPR / First Aid Certification
• HIV / AIDS Training (minimum 4 hours)
• When driving YouthCare vehicles, you must possess a valid WA State Drivers License and have taken Van Driver Certification Training or an approved Defensive Driving Course.
