In this over-night role at YouthCare's James W. Ray Orion Center you would join our team engaging homeless and street-involved young adults. You will work to create a safe and caring environment for young adults coming from the streets and actively contribute to creating a positive, stable, responsive, responsible and respectful environment for up to 15 young adults who are spending the night at the Orion Center. You will work as partof the YouthCare team of dedicated staff and volunteers.
This is a full-time position with a strong benefit package.
The Orion Center is unique in its range of services, providing basic needs such as food and showers as well as case management, a GED program, high school completion, post-secondary educational support, and employment support among others.

Title: Young Adult Shelter (YAS) Overnight Youth Counselor II
Program: Young Adult Shelter
Reports To: YAS Program Manager
Location: James W. Ray Orion Center
Status: Full Time
Salary Range: $14.07 per hour plus great benefits
Closing Date: Open Until Filled
WORK SCHEDULE: This position is full time and non-exempt. Work schedule consists of regular overnight shifts & some weekends. Flexibility is required.
POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the supervision of the YAS Program Manager, the YAS Overnight Youth Counselor II is responsible for the supervision of fifteen shelter guests and the nightly management of the program site at the James W. Ray Orion Young Adult Shelter. In conjunction with other shelter staff, the YAS Counselor's task is to create a safe and supportive environment for shelter guests. Counselors must be comfortable establishing appropriate boundaries and setting firm limits for shelter guests, enforcing shelter rules, providing crisis intervention and attending meetings. Must have the ability to establish a good rapport with homeless young adults with behavioral and emotional issues.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Responsible for the nightly supervision of the Young Adult Shelter Program.
• Ensure program rules are being enforced and the nightly operation of the program is within regulatory guidelines and agency treatment philosophy.
• Oversee and delegate tasks to shelter volunteers.
• Maintain clear communication with other shelter staff, including attending monthly meetings.
• Complete needed program paperwork including accurate case records, staff log, guest intake forms, and nightly paperwork.
• Complete incident reports on any facility damage, medical emergencies or any incident with occurs out of the ordinary nightly functioning of the shelter.
• Work collaboratively with other shelter staff and volunteers to ensure the program is providing the best services for each guest.
• Identify obstacles and support strategies for shelter guests.
• Provide conflict de-escalation and mediation, as needed, to shelter guests.
• Ensure facility maintenance and cleanliness meets health and safety codes.
• Assist Shelter Manager in the monitoring of shelter supplies and needs.
• Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
REQUIREMENTS:
• Able to stay awake during overnight shifts.
• Acceptance of a variety of lifestyles, behaviors, and cultural and spiritual practices.
• Ability to maintain professional behavior by keeping appropriate boundaries with youth and staff members of the James W. Ray Orion Center.
• Deep understanding of agency philosophy including harm reduction, positive youth development and conflict resolution.
• Ability to work as a member of a team.
• Ability to pass a DSHS Criminal Background Check.
PREFERENCES:
• Bachelor's degree in human services. Relevant work experienced can be substituted.
• Experience in a position supervising youth/young adults, preferably in a shelter program.
• Experience with at-risk youth populations.
• Experience working with communities of color.
• Bilingual Spanish/English.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Ability to perform moderate physical work, exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and 10 to 20 pounds frequently.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS -- Within 30 Days of Hire
• Must have current negative TB test
• CPR / First Aid Certification
• HIV / AIDS Training (minimum 4 hours)
• When driving YouthCare vehicles, you must possess a valid WA State Drivers License and have taken Van Driver Certification Training or an approved Defensive Driving Course.
