Community Coalition Advocate - TOGETHER! (Rainier/Tenino/Bucoda/Lacey)

Community Coalition Advocate (Rainier/Tenino/Bucoda/Lacey)

Lacey nonprofit youth development organization TOGETHER! is looking for two qualified Community Coalition Advocates working through the AmeriCorps*VISTA program. The positions will help with our coalitions that are working to create healthy, safe communities in in Rainier, Tenino and Bucoda. Application deadline is July 23 for local applicants, or July 18 if you live more than 50 miles from Thurston County. Training begins Aug. 27 and positions start Aug. 31 for a one-year commitment. The positions are 40 hours a week and you must become an AmeriCorps*VISTA member. Work location will vary between the home office in Lacey and onsite in Rainier, Tenino and/or Bucoda.

The Rainier and Tenino communities have high youth drug use and associated risk factors like favorable attitudes toward underage drinking and drug use, poor family management, extreme economic deprivation, lack of commitment to schools, and the need for more opportunities and rewards for "prosocial" involvement. Our coalitions recently have completed strategic plans and are beginning to implement the identified prevention strategies. The VISTA members will work with the community coordinator to build capacity, engaging volunteers and community groups to develop youth and family programs that strengthen community connections, reduce substance abuse and help to reduce poverty. The VISTA member also will support the development of sustainable prevention strategies aimed at reducing the risk factors and raising the protective factors associated with youth substance abuse. Building partnerships and member capacity, identifying and securing sustainable funding sources, and organizing and coordinating partners are all part of the coalition's needs.
