Youth Transition Program Assistant (Lakewood)

Essential Functions:


Under the direct supervision of the Youth Transition Program Manager, provides major support to plan and implement the Center for Independence Youth Transition Summer Program. This person would work with a team and projects could include the following:


• Present workshop materials and lead group activities.

• Plan curriculum and schedule for the five-day program

• Schedule motivational speakers and other activities

• Plan transportation and other details for program

• Keep detailed records to document work with youth, the planning process, and notes on improving the curriculum.

• Assist Program Manager with other tasks as needed

• Track hours worked and tasks accomplished


Competencies:


o Develop and maintain consumer files according to established policies.

o Maintain accurate consumer files and necessary records in our database.

o Familiarity with handling confidential information while also maintaining professional boundaries.

o Demonstrate a commitment to independent living philosophy in his or her work with consumers. Use effective and empathetic teaching techniques when working with consumers, stressing personal choice and control to the greatest extent possible.

o Provide effective outreach to people with a range of disabilities from diverse educational, ethnic, economic, and cultural backgrounds.

o Other duties as assigned.



Qualifications:


 A college degree in education, social work, psychology, or a related field is preferred but not required. Prior personal and professional experience working with people with disabilities may be substituted for education.


 At least one year of experience in secondary education is preferred.


 Experience or knowledge of independent living philosophy is a plus.


 Experience of living with a disability is a plus.


 An upbeat, positive personality, good sense of humor, and ability to be flexible and think on one's feet is an asset.

 Must be effective working independently as well as with a team.


Compensation:


This is a temporary, part-time, non-exempt position. There are no employee benefits because of the short time frame. Though it is expected to take 20 hours per week, the project may require additional paid hours. Hours will fluctuate by the week.


This project is expected to run from June 25th, 2012 through August 28th, 2012.


Pay rate is $15.00 per hour.
