TITLE: Education Coordinator

SCHEDULE: Full time and non-exempt. Work hours are 8 to 5 with some flexibility and occasional Saturday hours.

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Education Coordinator will work in close collaboration with the Employment and Education Manager, the entire Orion Center team and other employment and education team members to deliver quality education programs and other education support to participants. The Coordinator will provide curriculum and resources to engage clients to facilitate completion of their secondary education.
The Education Coordinator is responsible for the execution of the GED Program at the James W. Ray Orion Center including providing structure, leadership, resources and support to this program and ensuring educational gains for all enrolled high school students, GED-engaged, and work-training youth . This position hires, trains and supports the development of Literacy AmeriCorps Service members and volunteers. The Education Coordinator facilitates linkages with Seattle Public Schools Interagency High School and the Orion Center Team. This position coordinates with the teachers, ensures the enrollment of participants in high school, facilitates communication with partners and facilitates the distribution of resources. The Education Coordinator is responsible for tracking and reporting educational outcomes. This position facilitates the partnership with Seattle Education Access and ensures quality post-secondary education support to participants.

YouthCare serves homeless and street-involved youth in Seattle, Washington and operates seven housing programs in addition to the Orion Center. The Orion Center is unique in its range of services, providing basic needs such as food and showers as well as case management, a GED program, high school completion, post-secondary educational support, and employment support among others.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Coordinates GED program, including orientation for students and volunteers, enrollment, staffing, curriculum design and tracking of outcomes.
• Hires, trains, and provides ongoing support and development for Literacy AmeriCorps tutors who provide a large degree of teaching for the programs.
• Models best practices in teaching and tutoring and supports tutors in incorporating these practices in their work.
• Coordinates with the Orion Inter-agency School staff and facilitates weekly school meeting.
• Coordinate services with partner agency Seattle Education Access to support youth transitioning to post-secondary education. Collaboratively plan and publicize workshops and individual support to build interest in post- secondary education and connect youth to resources, financial aid, and scholarships.
• Maintains partnership with Seattle Public Schools' Interagency Academy. Communicates with Orion Interagency School staff to assist in the appropriate placement of youth , to obtain education documentation, and assess the needs and appropriate response to students out of compliance with educational expectations (attendance, behavior, academic engagement).
• Advises Orion participants on appropriate educational and/or training options; supports high school and GED students in accessing other resources available at Orion and in greater community.
• Assesses students' academic skills and educational needs and creates educational plans for Orion participants (specifically those enrolled in employment training).
• Documents educational outcomes for Orion participants.
• Coordinates with case managers, teachers and employment trainers regarding youth educational desires and needs.
• Participates in weekly staff meetings and employment and education team meetings.
• Participates in Orion Center core activities; including helping prepare / serve meals on a regular basis and working in drop-in program as needed.
• Periodically participates in or leads education and recreational activities for Orion Center youth on Saturdays.
• Attends a minimum of six in-service trainings annually.
• Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

PREFERENCES:
• Two or more years of experience as a Program Coordinator or lead staff/supervisor in an education or youth development program. .
• Two or more years in curriculum development and design.
• Demonstrated ability and skills in youth development, employment and training
• Experience working with homeless or high-risk youth and young adults
• Strong communication skills including writing and public speaking
• Secondary teaching credentials
• BA degree in education, social work or public administration or 8 years related experience.
• Experience recruiting and training volunteers

REQUIREMENTS:
• 2 or more years of experience teaching successfully in a secondary school and/or adult basic education setting, tutoring, or leading youth development/training programs.
• Experience teaching lessons in core academic subjects -- reading, writing, math, science, and social studies.
• Experience developing curriculum.
• Demonstrated ability to train, orient, coach and supervise teachers.
• Ability to integrate an understanding of a variety of lifestyles, behaviors, and cultural practices and beliefs into program design. Demonstrated understanding of how systemic oppression impacts educational progress.
• Ability to maintain professional boundaries with clients while building trust and respect.
• Ability to pass a DSHS Criminal Background Check.
• Ability to verbally and physically respond to an aggressive person in ways that de-escalate and contribute to establishing and maintaining staff and youth safety.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Ability to perform moderate physical work, exerting up to 50 pounds of force.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS -- Within 30 Days of Hire
• Must have current negative TB test
• CPR / First Aid Certification
• HIV / AIDS Training (minimum 4 hours)
When driving YouthCare vehicles, you must possess a valid WA State Drivers License and have taken Van Driver Certification Training or an approved Defensive Driving Course.
