AMERICORPS - College Access Now AmeriCorps Team 2012-2013 (Seattle)

Are you searching for an exciting and dynamic AmeriCorps service opportunity?

College Access Now is hiring our AmeriCorps Team for 2012-2013! We are hiring for both our high school (10 month AmeriCorps positions) and college persistence (12 month AmeriCorps positions) AmeriCorps teams (service descriptions attached). Applications are due no later than 5pm on Friday 4/13.

COMPENSATION INFORMATION: The Term of Service will be from September 1, 2012 until July 1, 2013. AmeriCorps members will complete a minimum of 1700 hours of service and will receive a living stipend of $12,100 paid over the 10 month service term, as well as health insurance at no cost. Upon successful completion of 1700 hours in 10 months of service, a $5,550 education award will be awarded and can be used to repay student loans or for future education expenses. Federal student loans may be deferred during the term of service.

College Access Now
Senior College Coach -AmeriCorps

College Access Now (CAN) is in its sixth year serving students in Seattle Public Schools dedicated to helping low-income young people gain admission to and succeed in college. We identify students with the motivation and potential for college, and then provide them with (1) ACT/SAT test preparation (2) intensive assistance in the college application process; (3) intensive assistance in the financial aid application process; and (4) guidance in transition to college. College Access Now is committed to engaging individuals without regard to disability, gender, race, religion or sexual orientation. Essential Reponsibilities

• Lead dynamic after school workshops for high school juniors on topics such as: personal statement writing, developing a campus list, completing college applications, completing FAFSA and other financial aid paperwork and transitioning to college.

• Intensive individual follow up with students between sessions to ensure all program goals and tasks are completed.

• Responsible for recruitment, interviewing and selection for additional students on a space available basis.

• Communicate regularly with students and families in person, by email, phone and social media.

• Track student performance in meeting program goals and compile data

• Work with other AmeriCorps members and CAN staff to provide support at CAN events and campus visits.

• Attend and actively participate in weekly trainings, meetings and planning sessions.

Required Skills

• College degree required.

• Strong interest in education, youth work, social services, or related fields.

• Ability to work well with diverse types of people.

• Eagerness to help disadvantaged young people improve themselves; commitment to public service and social justice; strong leadership skills.
• Excellent communication skills; outstanding organization and time management skills.

• Ability to multitask and handle potentially stressful situations calmly and appropriately.

• Ability to work independently and with others.

• Energy, creativity and persistence in working with young people.

• Teaching experience, or experience in youth development desired.

Junior College Coach -AmeriCorps

College Persistence Coach -AmeriCorps

College Access Now (CAN) is in its sixth year serving students in Seattle Public Schools dedicated to helping low-income young people gain admission to and succeed in college. We identify students with the motivation and potential for college, and then provide them with (1) ACT/SAT test preparation (2) intensive assistance in the college application process; (3) intensive assistance in the financial aid application process; and (4) guidance in transition to college. This year, CAN will launch a new College Persistence Program, which will support our students as they transition to college and persist to graduation. The program includes tracking student progress as well as helping students find resources and solve problems. • Provide students with college transition counseling including: connecting to student support services on campus, troubleshooting financial aid issues, involvement in campus life

• Communicate regularly with students in person, by email, phone and social media, maintain CAN's online social networking sites, respond frequently.

• Track student progress in college and prepare reports.

• Provide extended support and create personalized plans for students in danger of leaving college due to loss of financial aid, family issues, academic probation

• Support community college students to transfer to four year colleges on completion of two year degree.

• Work with other AmeriCorps members and CAN staff to assist in planning and provide support to CAN events and campus visits.

• Attend and actively participate in weekly trainings, meetings and planning sessions.

• Some travel to regional universities for student visits
