SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Shelter Youth Counselor is responsible for supervising and counseling youth in a residential setting that also hosts after school drop in activities for middle school and high school aged youth. It requires providing a safe and structured environment and ensuring that the residents needs for food, transportation, clothing, etc. are met. A Youth Counselor also facilitates groups on effective communication and life skills, as well as provides crisis intervention counseling. Additionally, a Youth Counselor is an active participant in the shelter advocate program, and makes referrals to outside services as needed. Attends weekly staff meetings and trainings as required.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Assure that the residents' daily needs for food, clothing, transportation, appointments, etc. are met.
2. Assist youth in meeting daily/weekly expectations by:
a. providing support and necessary help with individual incidence and/or crisis situations.
b. role model appropriate social skills.
c. Assist with drop in activities during drop in hours
d. provide tutoring support with homework assignments.
3. Participate in the development and implementation of a program of activities for shelter residents to include: group/house meeting, recreation, outings, household chores, and opportunities for individual goal setting/planning meetings.
4. Process program referrals, screen for eligibility, and conduct client program intakes including room check in. At termination, conduct client discharge and room check out.
5. Work with AYR clinical staff and function as a member of the treatment team by participating in the Youth Advocate Program and by adhering to the behavior management system, maintaining confidentiality and documenting progress of youth.
6. Co-facilitate and document regular group counseling meetings, and community meetings and document group activities.
7. Attend staff meetings, trainings, orientation sessions, and supervisions as requested.
OTHER FUNCTIONS:
1. Assist in the daily operation of the shelter (i.e. shopping, household tasks/maintenance, cleaning, etc.)
2.. Assist supervisor and other management with program needs as assigned.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:
1. Demonstrated ability to appropriately intervene in crisis situations (Crisis intervention skills).
2. Ability to communicate and set clear and firm limits with youth in crisis.
3. Ability to communicate clearly both written and verbal.
EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
1. Bachelor Degree in Social Work or equivalent. Two years experience working with youth at-risk, street youth, or youth in a residential setting may substitute for education.
REQUIRED LICENSES, CERTIFICATES OR KNOWLEDGE:
1. Current Washington State Drivers License and proof of valid insurance
2. Current CPR and First Aid Certification
3. Current Food Handlers Card
4. Current Washington State Counselor Registration Status
5. AIDS/HIV training
6. Proof of Negative TB test
WORKING CONDITIONS:
1. Required evening, weekend and holiday shifts
2. Potential incidents requiring physical restraints
3. Able to lift a minimum of 35 lbs.
