Salary Range: $14.42 - $16.10 Closing Date: 5/9/2012
WORK SCHEDULE: This position is full-time and non-exempt. Work hours will vary and may require working evenings and weekends.
POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the supervision of the Program Manager, the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) Bilingual School Teacher is responsible for educational services in a structured classroom setting appropriate to the development and communication skills of refugee minors with a concentration on basic academic competencies, and English language training. Academic areas should include Science, Social Studies, Math, Reading, Writing, and Physical Education. The Bilingual School Teacher will work with a senior teacher as well as AmeriCorps members and other volunteers. In the event there are no students enrolled in the ORR program the Bilingual School Teacher will continue to develop the educational program, and support Casa program needs with short-term floor coverage.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Teach all academic areas in Spanish for a 6-hour class day, working together with the Teaching Team.
• Develop a curriculum plan to promote student learning that incorporates weekly lesson/activity planning, and material preparation tailoring lessons to individual and cultural needs and interests.
• Supervise, support, teach, and mentor AmeriCorps Members and other classroom volunteers.
• Assess student English skills, academic ability, and learning styles via personal academic history, goals, and interests.
• Evaluate student progress through weekly tracking of attendance, school hours, participation, completing tasks, and daily productivity points.
Meet with clients on a regular basis to discuss progress, and areas of improvement.
• Prepare weekly lesson plans, class schedule, activities, and outings, in accordance with ORR curriculum guidelines.
• Conduct off site research for potential recreational outings, curriculum development, and community resource networking.
• Teach engaging, hands-on lessons in all major subject areas, and basic life skills, utilizing appropriate curriculum.
• Organize and conduct daily/weekly physical education, recreational outings, and structured activities for youth in care.
• Provide weekly reports on school activities/ lessons / outings, and student progress reports to the Program Manager.
• Support the Program Manager in providing quarterly program reports to the ORR.
• Attend weekly one-on-one meeting with the Program Supervisor to discuss program goals, requirements, curriculum, activities/outings, student progress, and time management.
The following duties are also required when there are no students enrolled in the ORR Program, and/or when deemed necessary by the Program Manager:
• Assist the Casa de los Amigos Case Manager with intake, assessment, admission, family reunification, and counseling & legal service referrals.
• Oversee the information/referral phone, and provide referral information as needed, making referrals where appropriate.
• Provide advocacy services, including informal counseling, and community referrals.
• Assist with crisis intervention and counseling to clients in care.
• Help maintain a secure and safe facility.
• Complete other duties as assigned by the Program Manager.
• Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
PREFERENCES:
• BA / BS degree in Education, Human Services, Social Work, or related field and one year experience, or three years comparable experience preferred.
• WA State teaching certificate and ESL endorsement strongly preferred.
REQUIREMENTS:
• Spanish proficiency and experience teaching ESL.
• Ability to use a computer to maintain school records and write reports.
• Must be organized, flexible, and professional.
• Ability to work independently as well as collaborate within a team environment.
• Acceptance of a variety of lifestyles, behaviors, and cultural and spiritual practices.
• Ability to maintain professional boundaries with clients while building trust and respect.
• Ability to pass a DSHS Criminal Background Check.
• Ability to verbally and physically respond to an aggressive person in ways that de-escalate, establish and maintain staff and youth safety.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Ability to perform moderate physical work, exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and 10 to 20 pounds frequently, and up to 50 pounds of force occasionally.

• Must have current negative TB test
• CPR / First Aid Certification
• Food Handler's Card
• HIV / AIDS Training (minimum 4 hours)
• When driving YouthCare vehicles, you must possess a valid WA State Drivers License and have taken Van Driver Certification Training or an approved Defensive Driving Course.
