JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title:
Youth/Adult Education Instructor

Employment and Education Program Director Classification: Full Time

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

SUMMARY OF POSITION:
The Youth/Adult Education Instructor teaches GED, ABE, study skills and/or other basic education to at-risk youth and adults in our programs. Assists students with educational needs to include linkages to other offerings such as post-secondary education. Develop plans and assists agency volunteers with education strategies. Individualizes cirruculum, assessments, staff lab model, May include vocational education components

SCHEDULE: Monday -- Friday 8:30 a.m. -- 5:00 p.m. -- 40 HOURS

LOCATION: Federal Way, Kent, and other service areas as needed

KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Demonstrated ability to work independently and follow through on projects and deadlines
• Experience working in a multi-ethnic business setting
• Ability to work as part of a team with internal and external partners.
• Experience planning and developing curriculum for specific student audiences and settings.
• Computer literate, knowledge of MS Word, Excel, Access, and comfortable with e-mail. Ability to learn and utilize databases may be required.
• Ability to adapt current instructional concepts to unique student needs.
• Ability to administer and interpret educational assessments.
• Ability to identify student preferred learning styles and educational needs and provide educational instruction and support which addresses preferred learning styles and needs.
• Design curriculum to work jointly with employer training curriculum.
• Teach skills necessary for educational success
• Maintain accurate participant records.
• Provide necessary reports and documents according to deadlines for tracking progress of participants.
• Administer student assessments as needed
• Work with partners including but not limited to Juvenile Rehabilitation Administration, King County Juvenile Justice, OSPI, local community colleges and school districts as well as other MSC partners to identify best practices and to ensure that a consistent youth program continuum is maintained.
• Work with participants to create individualized education plans and to identify barriers and youth risk factors. Refer to, advocate with and coordinate community resources.
• Work closely with other partners such as King County, Juvenile Rehabilitation Administration, , local school districts, colleges, Juvenile Justice, Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS), city/county government, other non-profits.
• Maintain current working knowledge of youth risk factors, youth cultural competencies, business techniques, workforce needs and industry trends.
• Work collaboratively with other project partners including but not limited to Program consortium members, worksites, businesses, families, and local schools.
• Maintain current, accurately documented participant files, complete all required paperwork and service tracking reports according to deadlines.
• Represent the youth program and MSC at external meetings to further the positive image of MSC in the community.
• Work with Education and Employment Director, Education Program Specialist and Programs Manager to monitor program.
• Complete and pass MSC's required Family Development Training and maintain annual certification through additional training.
• Understand and adhere to MSC policies around confidentiality and all standards of conduct as described in the MSC Personnel Manual.
• Other duties as may be necessary to maintain MSC's standards of quality on our properties.

• None

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
• Minimum 2 years teaching GED, ABE, and/or related instruction. Experience working with at-risk youth (including youth offenders) ages 14-24 is strongly preferred.

EDUCATION/LICENSES/ERTIFICATION/FORMAL TRAINING:
• B.A. degree in education, social services, or related field.

ESSENTIAL ABILITIES:
• Read, write and understand the English language
• Excellent communication and organizational skills with basic computer knowledge
• Ability to work independently, accurately and efficiently, with an eye for detail
• Excellent phone manners and customer service skills
• Requires valid Washington State Driver License, proof of current and auto insurance and reliable transportation

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

• Lifting up to 25 lbs. without assistance.
• Highly mobile position involving frequent driving; regular walking and, standing
• Stretching/Reaching, Hand/Finger dexterity, Stooping (bend at waist) frequently
• Mobility and ability to sit in front of computer screen for long periods of time

WORKING ENVIRONMENT
• Occasionally provide services outside normal business hours, while still maintaining a 40 hour work week.
• Travels to MSC offices are required for this position.
