Assistant Program Manager - Mountain Workshops will work under the Education Manager to coordinate and grow our Mountain Workshop Programs. The position is funded as a part-time position, with the intent of growth to a full-time position. The successful Assistant Program Manager will grow the program so that it can sustain a full-time position through program fees. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced outdoor educator looking to make a difference in a growing organization! The Mountaineers is equipped with excellent leadership, strong staff support systems, and hundreds of skilled volunteers. We are poised for growth and looking for the right staff person to help us achieve our goals.

Purpose: To provide high-quality, meaningful outdoor education experiences to youth in the communities The Mountaineers serves and to help volunteers connect youth groups to The Mountaineers.

Primary Functions:
Program Management
First point of contact for group leaders
Recruit volunteers for program delivery
Develop custom program for each group based on group goals
As youth group programming develops at the branch level, work with branch volunteer liaisons to establish effective coordination systems
Ensure all paperwork, including Certificates of Liability Insurance, Individual Waivers, and payment are received and filed
Ensure all administrative procedures are followed, including financial assistance, group paperwork and program evaluations.
Program Delivery
Act as host and leader for youth groups as needed
Teach when needed, especially in developing new curriculum
Curriculum Development

Provide guidance for committees and branches as youth programs are developed
Develop "canned" age-appropriate curricula to add to a "menu" of offerings for groups
Marketing

Brochure development and distribution
Web-based marketing, including volunteer opportunities
Volunteer Training & Recognition

Train volunteers in program delivery
Provide meaningful recognition to volunteers
Required Skills
Minimum 1 year (4 seasons) experience in Outdoor Experiential Education
4-year degree from an Accredited College or Institution
Experience training and supervising others
Knowledge of, desire to work with, and experience working with a variety of populations, including preschool through high-school, youth of varied abilities, diverse ethnicities and diverse socio-economic backgrounds
Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills
Excellent written communication skills
Experience with curriculum development
Experience working with volunteers
Strong organization skills
Desired Skills
Public Speaking experience

This position is grant funded at the starting Salary Range for 2 years (2012 & 2013)
The goal for this position is to realize the potential of The Mountaineers Youth Outreach. Our goal is 100% growth in the first year, 20% in the second year, 15% in the third year.
The successful Coordinator will transition into a full time job with a full time salary upon achieving these goals.

  • Compensation: $18,000-$21,000 DOE
