Assistant Literacy Specialist (Part-time/Temporary) - Seattle (Refugee Women's Alliance)


Position Description:
Refugee Women’s Alliance (ReWA) is a nationally recognized multiethnic nonprofit organization that provides award-winning services to refugee and immigrant women and their families in King and Snohomish Counties.

POSITION TITLE: Assistant Literacy Specialist (Seattle World School/SBOC)

DEPARTMENT: Youth Program

REPORTS TO: Youth Program Manager

STATUS: Non-exempt Temporary Part Time (10 hours/week; 2:30-4:30 Monday through Friday) through mid-June 2012

SUMMARY:
Assist in planning, teaching and supervising ReWA English Club (REC) classes as part of the 21st Century Community Learning Center (CCLC) after school program at the Seattle World School. Conduct one-on-one and small group literacy pullout sessions for high needs students. Communicate regularly with Lead Literacy Specialist, teachers, parents, other after school program staff, and Youth Program Manager. Attend all monthly ReWA after school staff meetings.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
Preparation:
· Assist in implementing REC curriculum within 21st CCLC at the Seattle World School/SBOC as it aligns with Washington’s Essential Academic Learning Requirements (EALRs) and school-day learning
· Assist in conducting outreach to school day staff and administration, students, and families in order to provide information about program and recruit students
· Assist in preparing and maintaining classroom and materials

Teaching:
· Assist in providing lessons in small group and classroom formats to support student progress in literacy (reading comprehension, writing, oral presentation proficiency, and listening skills)
· Conduct one-on-one and small group literacy pullout sessions for high needs students.
· Communicate with Lead Literacy Specialist on a regular basis to ensure student needs are being met and curriculum/teaching strategies are aligned to the school day

Supervision:
· Assist in managing classroom and student behavior by reinforcing positive values and handling sensitive, conflict situations
· Assist volunteers in working with students
· Work together with other after school staff to ensure student safety and success

Youth Program Team:
· Meet regularly with site staff and Youth Program Manager to discuss and plan programming, evaluate student progress, recruit/enroll new students and ensure program and grant goals are being met.
· Collaborate with partners (as needed) to provide additional literacy projects and supports within the context of after school program
· Assist with after school program field trips and family nights (as necessary)
Other:
· Maintain confidentiality when working with youth
· Attend monthly ReWA after school program staff meeting
· Any other duties as assigned by the YP Manager

QUALIFICATIONS OF IDEAL CANDIDATE:
· Demonstrated dedication and enthusiasm for working with diverse youth and communities through education
· Demonstrated experience in teaching and lesson planning (Literacy/Language Arts a plus)
· Ability to communicate and work well with staff in a multi-ethnic environment
· Demonstrated organizational skills
· Commitment to teamwork and collaboration
· Ability to follow through on goals and assigned tasks
· Respect for others’ experiences, opinions, languages, values, and cultures
· Ability to be flexible and patient

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
· Must have prior experience working with youth
· Must be able to pass a Washington State background check and be able to provide fingerprints for state requirements
