Youth Employment/Work Experience Placement Specialist (Tacoma, WA):


Tacoma Goodwill is a multi-million dollar retail and production operation with 28 stores in 16 counties, employing over 1,100 employees. We are a large and diverse non-profit organization with significant plans for future growth. We will serve over 9,000 disadvantaged and disabled individuals this year with jobs, job training and job placement. Summary: STEPS (skills, training, and employment preparation services for youth) is a program that provides case management, training, and support to youth 16-21 years of age. Job readiness and work experience are a pivotal part of the program. The STEPS program relies heavily on good relationships with community employers, both public and private. Youth in STEPS are both in school and out of school individuals. The Employment/Work Experience Placement Specialist teaches youth the skills necessary to be job/education ready and to provide supportive guidance and involve them in placement in positions where they gain experience. This is a full-time temporary position expected to last less than 6 months.

Principal Functions/Responsibilities:
  • Plan, schedule and instruct STEPS participants in job skills and preparation for placement in work experience

  • Work with students to learn how to construct resumes, interview skills, and apply on-line and in person for jobs.

  • Recruit community employers to provide work experience to STEPS participants.

  • Recruit community employers to provide long-term employment to qualified participants.

  • Match individual strengths and abilities of participants to work experience sites.

  • Recruit youth and enroll into STEPS program.

  • Provide outreach to the community to inform potential participants and service providers about services offered at STEPS.

  • Match and introduce youth to prospective work site employers.

  • Maintain relationships with both employers and participants during and after placement.

  • Resolve conflicts that may arise between work site supervisors and STEPS participants.

  • Assure all timesheets and other required data is recorded accurately in the participant file. 

  • Attend all meetings and trainings as required by supervisor.

    Qualifications:

  • Graduation from high school. (B.A. or equivalent experience desired)

  • One year experience in assisting youth in acquiring goals.

  • A strong commitment to helping young adults succeed in their life, learn leadership and feel empowered to improve their circumstances.

  • A demonstrated ability to plan, organize, and present information for young adults.

  • An ability to gain rapport and relate in a sensitive manner with youth with a multi-racial and multi-cultural background.

  • Ability to coach young people and help them to plan and implement the stepping stones to their dreams. 

  • Team oriented.

  • Basic Computer knowledge, Word, Excel, and Outlook.

  • Valid driver's license.
