SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Shelter and drop in volunteer is vital to the overall function of the drop in and shelter program. SKYS offers a 24/7 shelter for youth under age 18, as well as an after-school drop in program 5 days per week for at risk and homeless youth. We are seeking a 6 month minimum commitment with the possibility of a stipend upon completion.

Responsibilities include working under the direction of the Coordinator to develop and oversee activities in the drop in such as recreation, tutoring, and linkages to other services. Volunteers will also support in seeing that shelter youth transition safely to bed, answering and tracking phone calls, coordinating intakes through National Safeplace, and performing as a valuable key member of the staff team. Volunteers will be relied upon to develop important relationships with youth and provide guidance in a mentoring role.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Participate in the development and implementation of a program of activities for shelter residents to include: group/house meeting, recreation, outings, household chores, and opportunities for individual goal setting/planning meetings.
2. Develop and maintain resource guide for youth in the program.
3. Maintain safety and supervision of all youth in the drop in and shelter program at all times.
4. Maintain documentation of youth and activities.
5. Fulfill housekeeping duties/tasks as assigned.
6. Attend staff meetings, trainings, orientation sessions, and supervisions as requested.

OTHER FUNCTIONS:
1. Assist in the daily operation of the shelter (i.e. shopping, household tasks/maintenance, cleaning, etc.)
2. Assist supervisor and other management with program needs as assigned.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:
1. Demonstrated ability to appropriately intervene in crisis situations (Crisis intervention skills).
2. Ability to communicate and set clear and firm limits with youth in crisis.
3. Ability to communicate clearly both written and verbal.
4. Must be 21 years of age

EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
1. High school diploma or GED required. AA or BA preferred. Experience working with homeless or at risk youth may substitute for education.

REQUIRED LICENSES, CERTIFICATES OR KNOWLEDGE:

2. Current Washington State Drivers License and proof of valid insurance
3. Current CPR and First Aid Certification
4. Current Food Handlers Card
5. Current Washington State Counselor Registration Status
6. AIDS/HIV training
7. Proof of Negative TB test

WORKING CONDITIONS:
1. Possible evening, weekend and holiday shifts
2. Potential incidents requiring physical restraints
3. Able to lift a minimum of 35 lbs.
