JOB TITLE: ROOTS Volunteer Manager
REPORTS TO: ROOTS Executive Director
POSITION SUMMARY:
• Responsibilities: The Volunteer Manager is responsible for supervision of the ROOTS Young Adult Shelter program in concert with the Shelter Manager, management of the ROOTS volunteer program, community outreach, and documentation to satisfy grant requirements. These duties will be conducted in accordance with the ROOTS Vision and Mission, agency policies and procedures, as well as relevant federal, state and local standards, guidelines and regulations.
o Management of the ROOTS volunteer program: recruitment, training, scheduling, support and recognition of volunteers, including scheduling, support, and development.
o Supervision of the ROOTS Young Adult Shelter program, including supervision of Program Coordinators, supervision of on-call staff, and support of Shelter Manager including maintaining minimum staffing level on a nightly basis.
o Community outreach and public engagement.
o Documentation to satisfy grant requirements
• Authority: The Volunteer Manager supervises the Program Coordinators, on-call staff and all volunteer positions excepting that of Overnight Supervisor. This includes support, training and evaluation and development of these team members.
• Accountability: The Volunteer Manager is accountable to the Executive Director to support operational performance of the Shelter Program in support of the ROOTS Vision and Mission and for the accurate and timely recording of guest data.
This is a fulltime position with a salary of $37K/year (depending on experience) plus health benefits and paid time off.
VISION AND MISSION:
ROOTS delivers critical services to homeless young adults and other low income persons, advocates for policies that foster dignity and long-term solutions, and works toward building community partnerships.
ROOTS currently operates two direct services programs: the Friday Feast meal program, recognized by Seattle’s homeless newspaper Real Change as “the best of all soup kitchens,” serving over 8000 meals per year, and the ROOTS Young Adult Shelter, the largest emergency shelter in Seattle for young adults. Its mission is to offer critical emergency services in an atmosphere of welcoming hospitality. The shelter operates 365 days a year, employing a small paid staff, with a heavy reliance on volunteers.

Communicate proactively with the Executive Director, invested in team approach on program decisions and innovative thinker on program and volunteer management skills.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Ensure adequate volunteer staff are recruited, trained and scheduled to maintain a high quality of program at shelter, and meeting a minimum ratio for team members to guests.
Plan events and opportunities for acknowledgement of volunteers and team-building.
Maintain a regular presence at shelter to support and supervise volunteers, assess training needs, correct or terminate service commitments as needed.
Complete all paperwork and documentation required for supervision and volunteer recruitment goals.
Liaison with service placement organizations, such as the UW Carlson Center, outreach to colleges, churches, civic groups and workplaces toward new volunteer recruiting.
Support of Shelter Manager in the following: program evaluation, review of operating practices, supervision of case managers, guest behavior contract development and implementation, and nightly report response including determining guest bars, team member follow-up and general announcements.
Maintenance of sign-ins, hour logs, intake data and other records for both guests and volunteers.
Provide ongoing support and team member development of two to three part-time program coordinators, including regular supervision meetings, goal setting, evaluation and ongoing training.
Participate in regular meetings with the program staff and volunteers, including lead role in Program Coordinator meeting and All-team meetings as requested.
Regular attendance of community meetings including the University District Service Providers Alliance monthly meeting.
Position may include a trainer’s role in ‘The Ropes: Understanding and Engaging Youth Homelessness.”
Leadership in ROOTS’ anti-oppression and cultural competency journey, includes management of the ROOTS Change Team and recruiting a shelter team that more closely reflects those we serve.
Regular HMIS/Safe Harbors data entry.
Be familiar with shelter policies and practices and written records required by ROOTS and its contracting partners.
Maintain knowledge about the external environment as it relates to collaborative record keeping, documentation, and service partnerships and referrals for homeless youth and young adults.
Other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.
QUALIFICATIONS
Experience working with young adults or homeless and under-served populations, including demonstrated ability to positively engage with these populations and implement discipline
Must demonstrate ability to work effectively in both faith-based communities and volunteer-driven, community-based service organizations.
Must have highly developed communication skills: ability to communicate the written and spoken word clearly and effectively; ability to communicate to a wide variety of people with ease.
Good organizational skills: well disciplined, able to meet deadlines, self-starter, able to work under pressure of many priorities and deadlines.
Good interpersonal skills; demonstrated ability to recruit, screen, and sustain quality volunteers
Solid understanding of issues related to poverty, racism, and homelessness and capacity to advocate and build programs that counteract the oppression of those we serve.
Bachelor’s degree in human services, social work, psychology, or related field; certification or training in volunteer management, other relevant experience will be considered.
