-Homeless Support Services, providing outreach, overnight shelter, case management, employment and housing for homeless youth and young adults in East King County; and
-Youth and Family Services, providing counseling, substance abuse treatment, prevention and parenting programs in East King County.
Friends of Youth is currently seeking an Overnight Counselor at The Landing. This position is a full time position.
Description
The Overnight Counselor provides guest supervision, guidance, and support at The Landing shelter for up to fifteen homeless young adults ages 18-24. The Overnight Counselor is an awake staff who implements agency and shelter policies and is responsible for the safety and cleanliness of the facility.
Responsibilities
Guidance and Supervision
Responsible for enforcing all shelter and facility policies and procedures and holding guests accountable
Responsible for security of facility and grounds during shift
Responsible for whereabouts of every guest in shelter at all times
Provides a safe, caring, and non-judgmental environment for every guest
Respects differences in the guests' cultural, social, sexual, and religious background. Enhance cultural pride.
Monitors laundry and showers nightly
Assists in preparing and/or serving evening meals, snacks, and breakfast daily
Assists in cleaning shelter space after each meal
Reports changes in guests' behavior or situations through daily Log Notes and to The Landing Coordinator
Maintains prescribed medications and weapons in a secure area
Maintains a positive collaborative relationship with the Bellevue YMCA staff and members.
Nightly Tasks
Checks all shelter's guests into The Landing beginning at 8:45pm
Initiates orientation for new guests admitted during the shift
Laundry
Wash, dry, and fold used YMCA towels each night
Wash, dry, fold and properly store shelter bedding
Launder and sort guests' personal laundry every night
Required Skills and Qualifications
Education and Experience
Bachelor's Degree in Social Sciences field is strongly preferred
Must be over 21 years of age and in generally good health
Must have Red Cross First Aid & CPR Cards and Food Handler's Permit or obtain them within 30 days of hiring
Must pass TB Test Screening
Must be willing to submit to AND pass our Criminal History and Background check (WAC 388-73-030)
Experience working with homeless is strongly preferred
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Ability to develop warm and open relationships with young adults
Ability to maintain strong professional boundaries
Ability to observe and discuss behavioral problems and suggest appropriate alternatives
Ability to model positive behavior
Ability to work in a setting that is often highly stressful
Ability to interact with volunteers and provide clear instructions
Ability to work collaborative with a variety of organizations
Must demonstrate sensitivity and responsiveness to cultural differences and a commitment to the value of cultural competency
